Everything You Need to Know To Cook and Store Sausages

Sausages are a delicious and versatile food that can be enjoyed during any occasion or setting. Whether you’re eating them at a casual backyard bbq or a fine dining restaurant, like all meat products, sausages are only a good food choice if they have been freshly prepared and properly stored.

Sausages are often sold as either uncooked or ready to eat. At Gold Meat, we make fresh sausages that are ready to be cooked. This means that our sausages are uncooked, but require no additional step, such as further seasoning, or any other special preparation before cooking. This allows our customers to easily place our sausages on the grill or in a pan and enjoy them once they are cooked to temperature.

To prevent foodborne illness, according to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), uncooked sausages that contain ground beef, pork, lamb or veal should be cooked to 160 °F, while uncooked sausages that contain ground turkey and chicken should be cooked to 165 °F. All Gold Meat’s sausages are USDA inspected and approved.

All sausages, excluding dry sausage, are perishable and should therefore be kept refrigerated. According to the USDA, the following storage times should be followed for maximum quality:

If uncooked, fresh sausages can be kept until the expiration date in the refrigerator, and for another 1 to 2 months if kept in the freezer. Once cooked to temperature, fresh sausages can be kept 3 to 4 days in the refrigerator and 2 to 3 months in the freezer.

Sausages are no doubt a delicious treat. When eating sausage, it is important that you choose a fresh and high-quality product and avoid overly processed ones. We recommend sausages that are locally made and fresh.
